During our podcast commentary track for the Arrow season 5 finale, executive producer Marc Guggenheim revealed that his favorite scene ever on the show was the one between Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) and Moira Queen (Susanna Thompson) in that episode.
Guggenheim and his co-showrunner Wendy Mericle joined ComicBook.com to discuss the episoe, and were talking about something entirely different when the scene came onscreen and Guggenheim changed course immediately.
"All-time favorite scene in Arrow. All-time favorite. This scene wrecks me," Guggenheim said when the scene came up in the commentary.
Guggenheim and Mericle said that they recreated the Queen Mansion on a set, and that Stephen Amell was on hand for Susanna Thompson's scene. The trawler that rescued Oliver was also set
Mericle added that the scene was "that moment that I had always wanted to see in the pilot — she finds out her son is alive! It's incredibly powerful."
Guggenheim noted that everything plays — including the makeup that had Oliver's tear wiping away the grime on his face while he spoke with his mom.
"Both of their performances are beyond amazing," Guggenheim said. "I sent a clip of this scene to Greg [Berlanti] and I said this is the best thing we've ever done in my life."
You can now own Arrow Season 5 on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital.
New episodes return on Thursday, October 12, at 9 p.m. ET/PT following the season premiere of Supernatural.
