After lots of hopeful speculation, it looks like the rumors are true. In an announcement today, Rockstar Games has confirmed that Red Dead Redemption will officially become backwards compatible for the Xbox One on Friday, July 8th.

In their statement, the developer wrote, "Starting on Friday, every Red Dead Redemption Xbox 360 owner will be able to play the game directly on their Xbox One, regardless of which version of the game they own (Red Dead Redemption, Undead Nightmare and Red Dead Redemption: Game of the Year Edition). And for those who have yet to experience it, the game will be available to purchase on Friday from the Games Store on Xbox One." Undoubtedly, fans will be flooding Microsoft's online store at the week's end to try out the acclaimed game on their next gen consoles.

With it's release dating back to 2010, Red Dead Redemption stands as one of Xbox's most beloved games. It has often led lists as one of the games fans have most wanted to see become playable on the Xbox One alongside title such as Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Skyrim.

Earlier this year, a glitch by Microsoft did allow fans to play the game on the Xbox One for a short time before the slip was corrected. Apologizing for the incident, Xbox Live Director Larry Hryb said, "Microsoft tests all Xbox 360 games with our emulator to ensure a quality experience across a breadth of titles. Due to an error, some of the games currently in test were accidentally made available. We have since removed access to those games, and apologize for any confusion this may have caused. We will have more information on upcoming releases soon."

Red Dead Redemption focus on the character John Marston, a former outlaw whose family is threatened by crooked government officials, during the decline of the American Frontier. In order to save his family, Marston must bring several of his past accomplices to justice, and the game was lauded for its addictive storyline.

A sequel or perhaps a prequel has been on rumored to be on Rockstar's to-do list, but no official word on the possible title was given at E3 this year. Fans have also been hopeful that the game would be remastered for the Xbox One, but as of right now, fans can expect Red Dead Redemption to simply be playable on its new console without updated graphics.
