DC's Cinematic Universe has yet to churn out a film that wasn't divisive, but Suicide Squad did improve on many of the lessons the studio learned from their earlier effort, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

When compared to the universally loved Captain America: Civil War, it's hard not to point out the film's flaws, but perhaps more compelling is why those flaws happened in the first place. Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman recently addressed his initial enthusiasm for the film in an interview with Radio Times.

"I was there the first night to see Batman v Superman, got my popcorn and everything, and I'm not exactly sure what they did wrong, but I feel like sometimes you see a movie – and I could be wrong, or saying this because I'm in the industry – you can see that there's at times [too] many people deciding something. That there's not a clear voice from the director."

Warner Bros. is known as a directors studio, and it initially gave Zack Snyder a wealth of creative control. Still, when you're planning a universe so quickly and attempting to build it within the course of two films, confusion and a litany of creative directions is bound to become an issue.

"Sometimes when you watch movies you see that the producers are saying something, someone else is saying something, the directors are saying something. And sometimes, it doesn't work. I just feel like, what I have experienced at Marvel is that the directors are very much making the movie. So maybe that's it."

Now that the universe is starting to find itself on somewhat solid footing, it can ease up a bit and focus on the narrative at hand, rather than be so worried about building for further films.
