Netflix Unveils Release Date For Live Action Death Note Film

There are some anime series' that go beyond that particular sub-culture, and Death Note definitely falls into that category. The twisted tale of Light and his lethal notebook has been an international phenomenon over the years, as fans can't seem to stop talking about the series.

People have been asking for a live-action movie adaptation of the show for some time, and Netflix has finally delivered. The streaming service tapped horror director Adam Wingard to helm the project, and filming began back in 2016.

Since production went into full swing, the details surrounding the project have been slim. Today, however, the floodgates were opened. Netflix just debuted the first teaser trailer for the film, and finally announced its release date.

Death Note will be available to stream on Netflix beginning August 25, 2017.

Directed by Adam Wingard (Blair Witch), Death Note stars Nat Wolff (Paper Towns, The Fault in Our Stars) as Light Turner; Margaret Qualley (The Nice Guys, The Leftovers) as Mia Sutton; Keith Stanfield (Straight Outta Compton, Dope, Short Term 12) as "L"; Paul Nakauchi (Alpha and Omega) as Watari; and Shea Whigham (Agent Carter, Boardwalk Empire) as James Turner. The film will be produced by Roy Lee (The Ring, The Departed), Dan Lin (The Lego Movie, Sherlock Holmes), Jason Hoffs (Edge of Tomorrow), and Masi Oka (Heroes Reborn, Hawaii-Five-0).

Based on the famous Japanese manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, Death Note follows a high school student who comes across a supernatural notebook, realizing it holds within it a great power; if the owner inscribes someone's name into it while picturing their face, he or she will die. Intoxicated with his new godlike abilities, the young man begins to kill those he deems unworthy of life.
