The Mississippi Grind directing team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck will helm Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson, for Marvel Studios.
Marvel had been open about wanting to find a female director for Captain Marvel, which will be the first film that is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to be led by a woman. Choosing a male and female directing team is sure to garner some interesting responses.
Marvel did not respond to requests for comment from Variety.
The search for a Captain Marvel director was a long one, extending well after Larson has been cast in the lead role. According to Variety, Marvel Studios met with several contenders before making their choice. Marvel was reportedly also concerned about making sure the script for Captain Marvel was in good shape before choosing a director.

Marvel Studios was reportedly also looking for fresh perspectives to help grow the Marvel Cinematic Universe into its next phase, which will spotlight new characters like Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, and Black Panther.
The decision to hire Boden and Fleck reportedly comes after several meetings between Marvel Studios executives and the directing duo in which Boden and Fleck's vision for Captain Marvel remained consistently impressive.
Boden and Fleck's experience working in both film and television also reportedly worked towards their advantage in landing the job. The duo's film work includes Half Nelson and Mississippi Grind. They've also directed episodes of the television shows The Affair and Billions.
Meg LeFauvre (Inside Out) and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel's Gamora comic book) are working on the script for Captain Marvel. The film follows Air Force pilot Carol Danvers, whose DNA because infused with that of an alien being (a member of the Kree in the Marvel Comics universe) during an accident. The infusion gives Danvers superpowers including super strength, flight, and energy projection.
Captain Marvel currently has a 3.78 out of 5 ComicBook.com User Anticipation Rating, making it the thirteenth most anticipated upcoming comic book movie among ComicBook.com readers. Carol Danvers was created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gene Colan for Marvel Comics. Danvers made her first appearance in Marvel Super-Heroes #13 in 1968. She made her first appearance as the superhero Ms. Marvel in Ms. Marvel #1 in 1977. Danvers took over the mantle of Captain Marvel in 2012.
Captian Marvel is scheduled to open in theaters on March 8, 2019.
