Spider-Man: Homecoming doesn’t shy away from its connections to the grander Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that decision has also led to an unfortunate side effect.

Spoilers incoming for Spider-Man: Homecoming, so if you haven’t seen it yet you’ve been warned.

A flashback is seen early in the film showing Adrian Toomes and his construction crew working to clean up New York after the battle in Avengers (via ScreenRant). Damage Control takes ownership of the site away from them, followed by a time jump to “eight years later”.

It’s then that Toomes is shown with the Vulture suit, but that is also where the timeline of the MCU takes a hit. If you follow the general timeline for the MCU, especially in connection with Civil War, Homecoming is supposed to be set sometime in 2016 to fall in line the current day theme of new Marvel films. The problem is that The Avengers is understood to be in the year 2012. If that’s the case, then 8 years later puts Homecoming in the year 2020, and that obviously throws that whole “current day” premise out the window.

Since everything has been built off of The Avengers, including films like Iron Man 3 (six months later), Captain America: Winter Solider (two years after), and Avengers: Age of Ultron (a year before Civil War), that date seems to be set in stone. To hit the expected target of 2016 the time jump should actually be 4 years later but is that just an oversight on Marvel’s part or is one of the previous movies in need of some alignment?

Either way, this is not going to be the last time this happens, as Marvel’s universe just continues to expand. With Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, and Ant-Man and the Wasp cued up over the next few years, expect a few more of these to follow suit.

Spider-Man: Homecoming currently enjoys a 4.12 out of 5 on ComicBook.com’s anticipation rankings.

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine โ€“ distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man โ€“ but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

The cast includes Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, JacobBatalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly, Bokeem Woodbine, with Marisa Tomei, and Robert Downey Jr. It also includes Jon Favreau, Martin Starr, Kenneth Choi, Michael Mando, Selenis Leyva, Isabella Amara, Jorge Lendeborg, Jr., JJ Totah, and Hannibal Buress.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming are both in theaters now, followed by Thor: Ragnarok on November 3, 2017. After that Black Panther debuts on February 16, 2018, while Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018. Ant-Man and the Wasp is slated for July 6, 2018, followed byCaptain Marvel on March 8, 2019.
