Sunday was a sad day for mecha fans, because there was a closing ceremony for the legendary life-size Gundam statue in Tokyo. It was announced that the giant statue will be parting and fans were unsure if there would be anything taking its place. Sunday was the last day to see the RX-78-2 in its splendor, in front of DiverCity Tokyo Mall in Tokyo. The anime studio Sunrise held a ceremony and made a big announcement regarding the statue. It was announced that there will be a brand new life-size statue coming in the fall.

This new statue will be based off of the RX-Unicorn Gundam, from Mobile Suit Gundam UC. Although not much is known about the upcoming Gundam, The Gundam Fanclub website showed off an awesome concept picture of the new statue seen below.

The iconic RX-78-2 statue is leaving us after standing strong for almost five years. It stood outside of the Diver City Tokyo mall, which houses the Gundam Front Tokyo Attraction. The attraction features a massive collection of Gundam model kits, beautiful artwork from the franchise, and the Dome-G theater. The theater had debuted many shorts from the franchise, and also has a full virtual-reality experience.

The RX-0 Unicorn Gundam is the flagship of the UC project. It can be seen in the Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn RE:0096 series. If you are unfamiliar with the show, it is summarized by Crunchyroll blow:

"U.C. 0096. Three years after Char's Rebellion, Banagher Links, a boy living at the manufacturing colony Industrial 7, meets a mysterious girl who calls herself Audrey Burne. Audrey claims that she is trying to stop the Vist Foundation from handing over Laplace's Box to the Neo Zeon remnants known as the Sleeves, an act which could spark another war, and Banagher decides to help her. But the colony becomes a battlefield as fighting breaks out between the Sleeves and the Earth Federation Forces, who have also come to stop the handover..."

There is little known about the new statue, but there is talks that it will feature more movements, sounds, and lights. The new statue will be available to view in the fall of this year.
