The Weekly Shonen Jump magazine by Shueisha is one of the oldest manga magazines and continues to stand at the top even now. The magazine returns with exciting new releases each year, some of which don’t get the attention they deserve. Since WSJ has limited space for ongoing series, a lot of underperforming manga end up getting axed before they get a chance. The early reception plays a crucial role in deciding a manga’s future, and it’s safe to say that Under Doctor is going to stay for a while. The series didn’t become a groundbreaking hit like Kagurabachi when it debuted, since it was a rare case even in Shonen Jump history.

However, so far, Under Doctor is being well-received by both Japanese and international fans. Written and illustrated by Kyo Tanimoto, the series began serialization on January 25th, 2026, and has been making waves since then thanks to its promising story. After almost six months of serialization, the manga released its first volume on June 4th, 2026, and it’s already getting its first reprint. The official X handle of the manga confirmed that the reprint will be available in Japanese stores from July 10th, 2026. So far, the series has yet to confirm an English release date, but we can expect an update in early 2027.
My Hero Academia Creator Recommended Under Doctor to Fans
The manga’s first volume caused quite a stir on social media when the official X handle of My Hero Academia promoted its first volume’s debut. The cover page of the volume also includes a note from Kohei Horikoshi saying, “I think it’s a manga that believes in people. You can feel its strictness and kindness from the edges of the dialogue. And the artwork is great!”
It’s not uncommon for acclaimed Shonen Jump creators to support newcomers, especially someone as renowned as Horikoshi. His series has long surpassed the historic milestone of selling 100 million copies, which only a handful of manga have achieved so far. Not only that, but while Under Doctor is Tanimoto’s first serialized manga, he previously worked with Horikoshi as his assistant. Now that Tanimoto’s series has released its first volume, MHA creator is showing full support to a fellow creator.
What Is The Plot of Under Doctor?
Under Doctor is an action manga centering around a mysterious doctor named Haiji Kino, who can sleep anytime and anywhere. However, his medical skills are unmatched due to his ability to see lights emanating from a person’s body when he focuses on them.
Depending on the weak and brittle parts of the glow, he can deduce a person’s weak points and perform an accurate diagnosis without running any formal tests or scans. After treating the food poisoning of a fellow flight passenger, Haiji learns that the plane he is currently traveling on has been hijacked.
Luckily, his ability isn’t just to save people, but also to exploit his enemies’ weak points, making him a force to be reckoned with. He effortlessly manages to save everyone on the plane before jumping off to avoid revealing his identity as an assassin. The manga releases new chapters every Sunday on the official Manga Plus app and Viz Media’s official website.
