The Hobbit Opening Night Box Office

The Hobbit: An Unexpected journey is off to a strong start, taking in $13 million on its opening night. While the number might seem low in comparison to the record opening night box office of $43.5 million set by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, it is actually a record for the month of December. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opened in 3,100 theaters, including 326 IMAX screenings. The IMAX screenings, which were likely boosted by an airing of the first 9 minutes of Star Trek Into Darkness, accounted for $1.6 million of the total take. Warner Bros. is expecting the film to bring in $70 million over the weekend, as it rolls out to 4,045 screens. However, most are estimating that the film will actually bring in between $90 million to $100 million over its opening weekend.
