One of the big stories out of WonderCon yesterday was the announcement at the IDW panel of The Rocketeer/The Spirit: Pulp Friction by Mark Waid and Paul Smith. At the time, though, details were scarce; this morning, we have a little bit more information on the project, which will be an IDW Publishing/DC Entertainment co-release/crossover, since the latter still owns the rights to the Spirit. The series, which runs four issues, will kick off on July 10, setting up Waid and Smith as a likely centerpiece of the IDW presentation at Comic-Con the next week. "Not many writers have been lucky enough to write The Rocketeer or The Spirit," said Mark Waid, "so I feel like I've won the lottery. This is one of the most exciting—and scariest—assignments I've ever undertaken. Luckily, I've got Paul Smith to make me look good!" "This is one of those ideas that just makes me smile," said Editor Scott Dunbier, "I'm a long-time fan of both characters and it's an honor to work on it. And if Mark won the lottery, I hit the Powerball, baby!" IDW describes The Rocketeer/Spirit: Pulp Friction as "a murder mystery and political intrigue. From the grim and gritty streets of Central City where The Spirit navigates through the urban underbelly of corruption to the sunny skies of Los Angeles where The Rocketeer soars above the Hollywood elite, these two classic characters will become enthralled in murder, mayhem, and all manner of danger—and with a healthy dose of signature humor tossed in for good measure."
