Wonder Woman has soared straight to the top of the box office in its opening weekend.
While currently tracking for a $98 million opening weekend, Wonder Woman may break $100 million, reaching as high as $103 million in its first three days (plus Thursday night previews) at the box office. Wonder Woman opened in 4,165 locations
That mean that director Patty Jenkins is set to break the record for biggest theatrical debut for a film with a female director. The record is currently held by Sam Taylor-Johnson, who directed Fifty Shades of Grey to a debut of $85 million over three days and $93 million when factoring in the Valentine's Day holiday push.
Wonder Woman isn't the only superhero storming the box office this weekend. Captain Underpants debuted in the number two spot at the box office, earning $7.6 million on Friday from 3,434 locations. Captain Underpants is projected to earn $25 million over its opening weekend.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, which earned the top spot over the Memorial Day weekend, dropped to the third spot in its second week. The film took in $6.1 million on Friday is looking at a 68% week-to-week drop for a $22 million second weekend at the box office. The film's domestic box office total now stands at $115.3 million.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 remains in the top five in its fifth week at the box office, clocking in at fourth place. Marvel's latest film earned $2.4 million on Friday and is projected for a three-day total of $9.5 million. That will bring the movie's domestic total to $355.2 million.
Rounding out the top five is Baywatch, which drops from third place to fifth place as it continues to struggle to find an audience. Baywatch earned $2.4 million on Friday and is projected to earn $7.9 million over the weekend, bringing its box office total to $41.1 million.
