Adam West's Family Moved by Hometown Celebration

When Adam West died back in June it prompted an outpouring of love and respect for the man best known for being television's Batman. Now, in honor of what would have been the actor's 89th birthday his hometown is hosting a daylong party celebrating the Bright Knight.

West was born in Walla Walla, Washington in 1928 and lived there until he relocated to Seattle with his mother following his parents' divorce when he was 15. The city is celebrating West by declaring his birthday, September 19th, Adam West Day.

West's daughter Nina Tooley shared with The Hollywood Reporter how she's been "blown away" by the love and support shown to the family and West's legacy by Walla Walla's special celebration.

"We've been blown away by the amount of love and support the town of Walla Walla has shown," Tooley said. "Many of the businesses [including Starbucks and Macy's] have bat signals in the windows, and there are pictures of my dad all over the lobby of our hotel."

Events for Adam West Day will include a screening of the 2013 documentary Starring Adam West, the Batmobile on location, and a nighttime display of the Bat Signal. The West family will also be given a key to the city by Mayor Allen Pomraning along with an official proclamation of the holiday. There are even plans for an Adam West statue in the future. The celebration is a bittersweet event for West's family as his death was unexpected.

"This is a very emotional event for us -- bittersweet as we had been planning my dad's 89th birthday with him before he passed away, Tooley said.

West became an icon for his portrayal of the Caped Crusader on ABC's Batman which became a surprise hit when the show premiered in 1966. His final performance as Batman in the animated Batman Vs Two-Face will premiere at New York Comic Con on October 8th and will be followed by DVD and Blu-ray on October 17th.
