Gotham has cast The Walking Dead alum Benedict Samuel as mind-controlling rogue Madd Hatter, a.k.a. Jervis Tetch, in the show's third season on Fox.
Gotham's official character description say,"Tetch is a talented hypnotist teetering on the edge of madness. He arrives in Gotham with an unwavering desire to find his sister, Alice, a young woman who went missing in the city years ago. It is anyone's guess just how far down the rabbit hole he's willing to go in order to find her."
Samuel had a recurring role in the sixth season of The Walking Dead, playing the Wolf that Carol caught Morgan with. He's also appeared in Robert Zemeckis's The Walk and Australian miniseries The Beautiful Lie.
Hatter was created by Lew Sayre Schwartz and Bill Finger in 1948, making his first appearance in Batman #49. While Gotham's version is described as a hypnotist, the comic book villain used tech to control minds. The character is modeled after the Hatter from Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland , and Tetch himself is obsessed with the story. His crimes usually involve kidnapping a young woman and forcing her into a Wonderland fantasy, with herself as Alice and others in various roles, often as unwilling henchmen.
This is just the latest major casting update for Gotham Season 3. Fox previously added James Carpinello's Mario Falcone, Jamie Chung's Valerie Vale and Maggie Geha's recast Poison Ivy.
Gotham Season 3 premieres Monday, Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
