During a recent appearance at Heroes & Villains Fan Fest in Nashville, Gotham actor Drew Powell joined ComicBook.com to talk about the shocking revelation, made at the end of the season finale last month, that his character was in fact a proto-version of the DC villain Solomon Grundy.

The move, which ended three years of Powell’s character being referred to as “Butch Gilzean,” came after Butch was shot in the head and appeared catatonic in the hospital.
Did Powell know all along, or was the Cyrus Gold revelation new information?
“I think the producers wisely tell us actors very little, so if they had planned it for a long time, I certainly didn’t know about it,” Powell told ComicBook.com. “It’s very exciting, and look — the truth is, I don’t know very much about what’s coming next, and that’s the thing about Gotham: it keeps you guessing, so you’ve got to stay tuned to see. That was a cool reveal, and I was surprised by how many people knew who Cyrus Gold was. I mean, I knew, but it’s kind of been my business for the last three years. I was amazed on social media that people were freaking out right away. I would get the texts, about three-quarters of the way through the show, that ‘Oh no, you’re dead,’and then like ten minutes after that, ‘wait, what?’ I got a lot of those over the course of the finale night.”
Gotham‘s origin story continues to unfold, and as the show enters its fourth season, the stakes will be higher than ever! With the Court of Owls decimated, the aftermath of the Tetch virus crippling the city, and every (surviving) villain in Gotham‘s underworld jockeying for power, Jim Gordon and the GCPD will have their hands full.
And that’s just the beginning! What threat does Ra’s al Ghul pose, and will Penguin regain his title as the King of Gotham? What new villains are in store for season four, and what does Bruce Wayne‘s season finale reveal mean for Gotham City — and his ultimate destiny?
Gotham stars Ben McKenzie as Detective James Gordon, Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne, Morena Baccarin as Leslie Thompkins, Sean Pertwee as Alfred, Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin, Erin Richards as Barbara Kean, Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle/the future Catwoman, Cory Michael Smith as Edward Nygma/the future Riddler, Jessica Lucas as TabithaGalavan, Chris Chalk as Lucius Fox, Drew Powell as Butch Gilzean, Maggie Geha as the future Poison Ivy, Michael Chiklis as Detective Nathaniel Barnes, Benedict Samuel as Mad Hatter.
