A classic character returns to the fold in DC Metal #4, but it isn't exactly how you expect.
Incoming spoilers for DC Metal #4, so if you haven't read the issue yet you've been warned.
DC Metal has revolved around the journal of Carter Hall, the hero many have come to know as Hawkman. Batman's studied his journal in great detail, but nothing he studied there prepared him from the meeting in DC Metal #4, where Batman and Superman finally meet the journal's writer, Hawkman. The only problem is, the meeting does not seem to get off to a great start.

For context, a withered and weary Batman finally finds a way to break Superman free from the Dark Multiverse's battery, halting the sinking of the current multiverse. At the behest of Sandman, the two heroes make their way to the World Forge, where the last pure bright metal of possibility lies.
Unfortunately, when they arrive they find the world forge dark, and with it the hope that they can put an end to Barbatos' conquering of worlds. Superman can't believe they've come this far to just fail now, but Bruce starts going over Carter Hall's journal, saying "the forge was supposed to be a place of creation, of beginnings."
Not long after that, a booming voice comes from behind them, saying "I was wrong, Bruce Wayne."
That voice belongs to Carter Hall, who is hulking in stature and even more hawk-like in nature than previous versions. He's massive and wars metal wings and armor coursing with the power of the World Forge. If that wasn't enough, he also wields a massive maul, because eventually, he doesn't have any problem with running up the score.
As he looms over them Hawkman says "I am Carter Hall, Dragon of Barbatos, Keeper of the Dark Forge, and there are only endings here."
That's one heck of a cliffhanger, and only time will tell if Batman and Superman can find some way to coax him out of the service of Barbatos.
