While discussing DC's Legends of Tomorrow recently, producers have pointed out that the show has leveled up in crazy in its second season, and referenced "Raiders of the Lost Art," tonight's midseason premiere, as being particularly over-the-edge.
It all started with the midseason finale, executive producer Phil Klemmer told ComicBook.com.
"As soon as I saw that scene being shot and what Arthur was bringing to his weird American auteur alter ego, it was like 'I don't know what this is, but I'm going to watch it,'" Klemmer said.
We asked him about when in the production process he realizes how wild an episode is getting.
"Usually it comes in the [writers] room, when you're breaking a story and it involves '60s filmmakers and Hollywood icons and George Lucas," Klemmer said. "Usually, it comes when you're forced to call Warner Bros. legal counsel and say 'Are we allowed to do this?' That's when you're like 'Are we doing something totally crazy, or have we found our level?'"
"When everybody's committed to doing the same kind of crazy, it sort of makes sense," he added.
Klemmer described the increasing absurdity of some elements of Legends of Tomorrow in light of the old parable about putting a frog in a pot of water: if you put a cold-blooded animal in a pot of cold water and gradually increase the temperature, the animal will never notice that it's being cooked until it's too late. If you put that same animal in a pot of boiling water, it will thrash and panic and try to escape.
"I think that's kind of like what we're doing with our audience," Klemmer said. "It's just like a couple of degrees crazier with every episode, and by the time you get to 9, you don't realize that the pot is boiling over."
