Being a superhero is tough work. There's no set hours, the pay is arguably petty, and it is nearly impossible to buy a half-decent life insurance policy when your job is fighting bad guys. For most, they are fine watching superhero antics from afar and awing over their favorite characters, but the folks on Powerless are a bit different. The comedy takes place within a world where DC Comics heroes are alive and well - kind of. Apparently, two of Batman's sidekicks have already bit the dust on the show.
"You are aware that two Robins have supposedly died on the job?" Ron asks Van.
Clearly, he wasn't.
In the comics, Robin is a dangerous gig, and it doesn't have the best track record. While the original Robin Dick Grayson made out okay, becoming Nightwing (and even Batman a couple times), the second Robin is a perfect example of how the job can go wrong. Jason Todd was mercilessly tortured by the Joker after being captured, and the sidekick sacrificed his life to save his mother when the villain detonated a bomb in the building they were being held. Other iterations of Robin like Stephanie Brown and Damian Wayne have also died in the line of duty in certain storylines, but comics are comics; there is always a way for them to come back.
