Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite’s Roster Could Be More Expansive Than Ever

We've been waiting patiently for new information on the return of the Marvel vs. Capcom franchise with Infinite, ever since the game was officially announced late last year. More than likely, we'll see this news when the Electronic Entertainment Expo is underway, with Capcom assuredly set to release more of the roster.
But here's the thing – this could very well be the biggest roster that the series has seen to date, especially if we see new additions outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Yes, that's including the 56 fighters included in Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes, along with the dozens in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
The team at Eventhubs recently discovered a quote in an interview conducted back in Metro in April, indicating that characters from outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe could appear. At the time, producer Mike Evans noted, yep, it's definitely a possibility. (And we noted as such with the idea that X-Men characters might be introduced as DLC.)
The whole exchange is below, and it points out that we could be looking at a much bigger roster than anticipated:
Metro: When this was first announced some fans theorised that the Marvel characters would only include those that Marvel has the cinematic rights to. That is the case so far, but is that going to be true for the whole game?
Mike Evans: No…
Metro: It's nothing to be ashamed of, if it's all down to the lawyers.
Evans: Totally, totally. No, but it's not. And if Marvel were here they would answer as I'm going to. It's not based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We take a lot of inspiration from the cinematic universe, but the game is a completely original universe.
Metro: So you could have the Fantastic Four or X-Men in the game, if you wanted them?
Evans: I can't say about that one.
Metro: You can't say if you could?
Evans: I… can't answer that question.
Metro: You can't say if you could say if you could?
Evans: Exactly! [laughs]
Metro: [conspiratorially] You can have Doctor Doom though, surely?
Evans: Oh, ah… I would say stay excited. We have many announcements coming. But you're not the first to ask that one!
So what does that mean? Well, nothing's official, obviously, but we could see X-Men, Fantastic Four and even more faces appear on the Marvel side – not to mention the countless classic favorites from the Capcom side.
We'll see how things add up over the next few weeks as more of the roster is revealed. Here's hoping we see some classic favorites make a return. (That means you, Venom.)
Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite launches on September 19th for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
