New Square Enix Game on PS5 Has a Nearly Perfect Review Score With PlayStation Fans

A new Square Enix game on PS5 has a nearly perfect review score with PlayStation fans on the PS Store. And considering the game in question, an RPG, has an 88 on Metacritic, which puts it among the highest-rated games of 2025, perhaps this shouldn’t come as a surprise. That said, even an 88 on Metacritic may be selling the Square Enix RPG short if these PlayStation Store reviews are anything to go by.

The big PS5 release this week is obviously Ghost of Yotei, but the cinematic action-adventure game is unlikely to scratch an itch for RPG fans. While it has some RPG elements, it’s not an RPG. Meanwhile, this new Square Enix RPG actually is sitting two points higher than the big new exclusive from Sony on the aforementioned Metacritic. Thus, if you need something new to play, you aren’t interested in Ghost of Yotei, and you like RPGs, then Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles should be on your radar.

A Hit With PlayStation Fans

For those who do not know, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is an expanded remaster of the 1997 tactical role-playing game, Final Fantasy Tactics, a PS1 exclusive and a game often cited as one of the best RPGs of its time. A remaster of an all-time great being great seems obvious, but we have seen many, including Square Enix, mess up what should be simple remasters in the past. A semi-recent example of this is Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles strikes the perfect blend of modernizing a nostalgic classic while staying faithful to everything that makes it great and nostalgic. Hence why it has a 4.84 out of 5 rating on the PlayStation Store after nearly 1,000 user reviews.

Positive Reviews Elsewhere

It’s not just PlayStation fans enjoying the new Final Fantasy release. On Steam, for example, it has an 88% approval rating. Meanwhile, on the Xbox Store, it also has a near-perfect rating. The only place it does not have great user reviews is on Metacritic, but next to no game ever has a positive user reception on Metacritic.

All of that said, those interested in checking out what all the fuss is about with this remastered classic should expect to fork over $49.99 for the PS5 and PS4 game. Unfortunately, for those on the PlayStation 5 Pro, it does not have any PS5 Pro enhancements, like many of the recent big releases.

All of that said, and as always, feel free to leave a comment letting us know what you think, or join the conversation over on the ComicBook Forum. What have you been playing on your PS5?
