Games like Quake Champions thrive on multiplayer competition, and right now, players can jump into its open beta, from now through next week, and see what the forthcoming follow-up is all about. But soon, there will be a new mode added to the game that will really put players to the test, since they won't have teammates to rely on.

Bethesda has introduced a new trailer for the game that debuts the new Duel Mode, in which one player takes on another in single player action. "Quake Champions is a frenetic test of skill and the ultimate competitive game," the company noted. "The purest form of this proving ground is Duel mode, a 1-v-1 showdown to decide who is best, once and for all."

The player gets to select from three different champions before setting foot into the arena, and then line them up in order that they want them to be played. The first team to eliminate all three of the opponent's champions will walk away with the victory.

The mode is actually live now in the open beta, which runs through May 21st, so you can actually give it a try. A word of warning, though – it's going to be just about you, and only you, so make sure you've got enough practice with the game first before you jump in. If you think you're ready, though, invite your friends and see what they have to offer.

1-v-1 will no doubt be included in the final game, which will offer a tremendous variety of modes for players to choose from, as well as the various characters, each with their own certain attributes and special styles of attacks. The beta, which can be downloaded for free by everyone (no need for a special invite code), allows you to take these characters for a trial run, well before the game comes out.

You've got a few more days yet, so hop in and join the madness. Even if you get fragged a few times, it's more than worth it as you get the hang of the controls and eventually become a Quake master.

Quake Champions will release for PC later this year.
