Nintendo didn’t announce many third-party games at E3 2017, but they did reveal the ultra-popular Rocket League is coming to the Switch. It seems like Rocket League developer Psyonix is putting a lot of effort into the Nintendo Switch version of the game, although there will be sacrifices.
In a recent interview with IGN, Psyonix revealed Rocket League will run at 720p in both the Switch’s handheld and docked modes, as framerate was their primary concern.
“Performance was what mattered most to us, so we aimed to make sure that the game would run at 60 fps docked and undocked.”
Well, 60fps is certainly nice, but games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe run at 60 frames regardless of what mode you’re playing in, and get a nice bump to 1080p when docked. Rocket League isn’t exactly a graphical powerhouse, so it’s disappointing to hear they couldn’t figure out how to boost the game while docked.
Oh, and speaking of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the game was a source of inspiration for Psyonix…
"The fact that [Mario Kart 8] is getting 60 fps docked and undocked, even in splitscreen with two players is a huge thing for us. We weren’t entirely sure it was going to be possible for a lot of technical reasons, but I thought we should absolutely try it after playing through the Mario Kart multiplayer.”
Again, if Mario Kart can do 1080p 60fps, I don’t see why Rocket League can’t, but oh well. Aside from being 720p it sounds like Rocket League will fully-featured on Nintendo Switch:
Rocket League on Nintendo Switch will include the same features, upgrades and content that millions of players worldwide have come to know and love on other platforms, plus several exclusives available only to Nintendo Switch owners. Rocket League will support all of the various play modes on Nintendo Switch, including TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, both Online and Local Multiplayer, and be available for 1-8 players. It will also launch with Cross-Network support for players to compete against opponents on other available platforms.0comments
