This week’s blockbuster movie releases are poised for a big box office showdown. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has been ruling the top spot for two weeks straight (and banking big money in the process), but this week could see a major upset, with Alien: Covenant hitting theaters.

Read on for the early box office forecast, which puts Alien: Covenant at the project winner for the weekend.
The Wrap reports that Alien: Covenant is estimated to earn $40 – 45 million in its opening weekend at 3,716 locations. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 earned $65 million in its second weekend, and projections are for it to take another 50% drop in its third weekend, which would put it at around $30 million.
It should be noted that Fox’s projections for Alien: Covenant are on the low side. The first wave of reviews haven’t been stellar, and despite the success of an R-Rated film like Deadpool, the returns on the Alien franchise seem to be diminishing.
As you can see above, Alien: Covenant has a modest 3.7/5 ranking in our Anticipation Ratings Database. That’s a sure sign that fan excitement for this Prometheus sequel isn’t nearly as high as Fox probably wants it to be.
Meanwhile, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is sitting pretty with a 4.59/5 user rating in our Composite Database – which is high enough to guarantee that the film will be getting some repeat business, as well as drawing in new crowds from those lured by positive word of mouth.
