While they may fight them, heroes need villains to give them purpose, but when it comes to the expansive Marvel Cinematic Universe keeping track of the universe's many villains can be a big task. Fortunately, one fan has come up with a detailed infographic tracking all of the bad guys in the MCU.
Reddit user murdockmanila has been keeping track of all the villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe -- including all the current movies and television shows, a total of 34 total projects as well as some upcoming movies and shows -- in a continuously updated infographic. Entitled "The Rogues Gallery of the MCU," the expansive visual record not only documents each villain or evil team, but includes a photo, what projects they appear in, and breaks them down by various categories indicating how significant they are to the MCU. You can check out a mobile-friendly version of the massive infographic here.
This latest version of the infographic -- which appears to be a work in progress dating back at least a few years -- includes villains from the various MCU movies and television shows that debuted this year. The infographic also includes a section of "Former Rogues" to feature former bad guys who have taken a redemptive heroic turn -- a list that includes The Punisher's Frank Castle and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's Nebula.
And it isn't just already released films and television shows that are represented on the list. Characters in upcoming MCU projects are also represented, with villains as seen in various trailers for films such as Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War. The best part of the gallery, however, may be how each individual villain also has a bit of commentary accompanying their names to describe them. Doctor Strange's Dormammu is noted "hates time loops" while Agents of SHIELD's Kasius is described as "basically Jared Leto in Blade Runner 2049."
The best entry on the list, however, is probably that of the ultimate MCU big bad, Thanos. The Mad Titan has the largest spot on the entire list and is rightly noted for being "all over the MCU" and is described as "politics bore him, Ronan hates him, his children hate him, dermatologists hate him." You can check out his entry below.
Thanos getting the biggest spot in the entire gallery makes sense considering the massive impact the villain is poised to have on the MCU. The villain's arrival on Earth in Infinity War will bring together all of the heroes from the Marvel films and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has previously hinted that the events of Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel, the yet-untitled Avengers 4, will bring something of a conclusion to the MCU as fans currently know it. Avengers: Infinity War directors the Russo brothers have also talked about the significance of Thanos, telling Chinese microblogging website Sina Weibo that the upcoming Avengers installment is, in many ways, a Thanos movie.
"Okay, I'm going to start with Thanos," Joe Russo said. "I'm most excited for the audience to learn about him. I think he's a very interesting and complex villain. That’s why I like him. That's why I'm excited for the audience to learn about him. I think his motivations, albeit psychotic, are compelling. And I think that in a lot of ways this is his movie, so it's going to be very interesting to see how people respond to Thanos in the film."
