Captain America: Civil War brought together (and tore apart) a handful of well-established characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but the one who seems to have made the biggest impact on audiences is Spider-Man. Spider-Man made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in this year's Marvel Studios blockbuster with Tom Holland taking over the role in a rebooted take on the iconic character.
Following his Civil War introduction, Spider-Man is going on to have his own feature film titled Spider-Man: Homecoming in July of next year. On the heels of its titular character being one of the most acclaimed aspects of the year's most beloved film, can Spider-Man: Homecoming live up to the hype? According to the Russo Brothers - directors of Captain America: Civil War and the upcoming third and fourth Avengers movies - it might exceed already high expectations.
Telling ComicBook.com that the he and his brother Joe worked closely with Homecoming director Jon Watts while bringing Spider-Man into Civil War, Anthony Russo has full confidence in Watts' directing abilities. "[Joe and I] love [Jon Watts]," Anthony Russo starts. "We think he's an incredibly talented filmmaker, super bright guy."
"I think the tone and the direction that he's heading in that movie are fantastic," Anthony Russo says. "I think it has the potential to be the best Spider-Man yet, and I know that's saying a lot because perhaps my favorite comic book movie of all time is Raimi's Spider-Man 2."
The events Captain America: Civil War will undoubtedly make an impact on the things to come in Spider-Man: Homecoming, some even being included in the film, but Homecoming will very much be Jon Watts' movie but that doesn't mean the directors don't work together to keep the grander scheme of the Marvel Cinematic Universe alive.
"From a process standpoint, it's like it is with all other Marvel directors," Anthony Russo explains. "Everybody runs into each other in the hallways, we're passing off story information between each other. I don't necessarily know how much it influenced me yet because we're not involved in it on a day-to-day project, a process, and we've seen as much as everybody else has seen, meaning if you were at Comic-Con and you saw the Comic-Con trailer, that's what we've seen of it."
In summary, "He's crazy talented, the script is amazing, and we have really high expectations for the movie," Anthony Russo concludes.
The Russo Brothers' most recently released endeavor, Captain America: Civil War will be available for digital download on September 2 and on blu-ray/DVD on September 13. Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters July 7, 2017.
