We will likely never see it on the big screen, at least not in our lifetimes, but the thought of witnessing an Avengers vs. X-Men showdown with the live-action portrayals as we have come to know them is something geek culture often buzzes about. Of course, the Avengers call Marvel Studios and Disney home while the X-Men reside at 20th Century Fox.
None of that stopped ComicBook.com from fantasizing about the event with 17-year Charles Xavier acting veteran Patrick Stewart. During a press event for Logan, Stewart's possible last outing as the leader of mutant-kind, ComicBook.com asked Stewart who he thinks would win in a battle between the two Marvel Comics powerhouses.
"X-Men versus? I don't know who the Avengers are," Stewart joked.
"Of course, I do," Stewart said. There's no contest. Bring on Famke Jansen, James Marsden... We'll sort them out."
Is that a challenge? That sure does sound like a challenge. Although Hugh Jackman won't be around to slice up Captain America, seeing as he is very firm on Logan being his last as James Howlett, the X-Men sure do seem very confident in the ability to take on Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
As for the hopes of seeing Avengers vs. X-Men realized on the silver screen inevitably spawned by this conversation, fans should not get their hopes up. In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Avengers: Infinity War co-director Joe Russo ruled out any discussions regarding the inclusion of X-Men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
"As far as we know, right now there isn't talk regarding the X-Men," Joe Russo said. "I don't know if behind-the-scenes there were conversations or if there are conversations happening but we certainly haven't heard of any."
On the bright side, with the rights to X-Men and Avengers residing at different studios, the opportunities for more films from each Marvel faction come about more frequently. For now, catch Stewart's brilliant performance Charles Xavier in Logan in theaters a couple of weeks.
