Logan: Hugh Jackman Says Fans Will Buy Into A X-23 Movie
This week, Marvel diehards will be able to bring home Logan as the film had its Blu-ray and DVD release. Fans are surely eager to rewatch the gritty film and relive its heart-stopping action. And, of course, audiences are ready to see Dafne Keen smash her role as X-23 once more. The young star stole the film's spotlight at times from heavyweights like Hugh Jackman, and fans are already wanting to see more of her. Since the film debuted, critics and fans have asked whether Keen might one day star in her own X-23 spinoff. And, if Jackman has anything to say about it, the talented actress will get the chance sooner or later.
Recently, Jackman sat down with Collider to talk about the home release of Logan, and the actor gave some spoiler-filled insight into the film. At one point, the Australian actor was asked about Wolverine being rebooted in the future now that Jackman has bowed out from the role. The star says he gets why Fox would be interested in doing such a thing, but Jackman is far more intrigued by X-23 and her backstory at the moment.
"I definitely think the spirit of Logan is in a way a reboot of that desire to keep taking risks and to ask more difficult questions, and to go deeper within the characters. In an irreverent way, it's exactly what Deadpool did too. I think it's endemic to the character. I think for me, it would make sense to go younger with Logan. I think it would be very difficult – however, there's a female 11-year-old who could absolutely frickin' nail it, for my money," Jackman said.
"I was 30 when I got the part, so I think it would be wide open to interpretation. I think it could be anything. You could go any color, any race, anything. If you look at all the drawings and all the different interpretations from different artists over the years, I think it's completely open. I think audiences will buy it."
So far, there has been no official word on whether a X-23 movie will be coming down the pipe at 20th Century Fox; However, the studio has had conversations about the spinoff with James Mangold. The director told ScreenRant earlier this month he's talked to the studio about the possibility. Mangold also briefly explained the kind of story he'd like the X-23 film to house by saying it should be "a very honest film about young people...a very honest film about young people growing up."
In 2029, the mutant population has shrunk significantly and the X-Men have disbanded. Logan, whose power to self-heal is dwindling, has surrendered himself to alcohol and now earns a living as a chauffeur. He takes care of the ailing old Professor X whom he keeps hidden away. One day, a female stranger asks Logan to drive a girl named Laura to the Canadian border. At first he refuses, but the Professor has been waiting for a long time for her to appear. Laura possesses an extraordinary fighting prowess and is in many ways like Wolverine.
She is pursued by sinister figures working for a powerful corporation; this is because her DNA contains the secret that connects her to Logan. A relentless pursuit begins … In this third cinematic outing featuring the Marvel comic book character Wolverine we see the superheroes beset by everyday problems. They are ageing, ailing and struggling to survive financially. A decrepit Logan is forced to ask himself if he can or even wants to put his remaining powers to good use. It would appear that in the near-future, the times in which they were able put the world to rights with razor sharp claws and telepathic powers are now over.
Logan stars Hugh Jackman (Logan), Boyd Holbrook (Donald Pierce), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Dafne Keen (Laura Kinney/X-23), Stephen Merchant (Caliban), Elizabeth Rodriguez (Gabriela), and Richard E. Grant (Dr. Zander Rice).
James Mangold (The Wolverine) directed, based on a screenplay he co-wrote with screenwriters Scott Frank and Michael Green.
