Marvel's Runaways is based on the Marvel Comics series created by Brian K Vaughan and Adrian Alphona. The series follows a motley crew of teenagers who are forced to come together when they discover that their parents are all part of a secret society of super villains called The Pride.
The series pickup was officially announced today at Hulu's up front panel. The announcement was accompanied by the first footage from the Marvel's Runaways pilot.
Marvel's Runaways is created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage for Hulu. Schwartz and Savage will serve as showrunners. The series is produced by ABC Signature Studios, Marvel Television, and Fake Empire Productions.
Marvel's Runaways stars Rhenzy Feliz as Alex Wilder, a tactically minded geek, Lyrica Okano as Nico Minoru, a goth girl with arcane power, Virginia Gardner as Karolina Dean, an alien whose parents masquerade as popular actors, Ariela Barer as Gert Yorkes, an intelligent punk and the daughter of time-travelers, Gregg Sulkin as Chase Stein, a high school jock who is the son of super scientists, and Allegra Acosta as Molly Hernandez (Molly Hayes in the comics), the youngest member of the group who is endowed with super strength.
As members of the Pride, Runaways also stars Ryan Sands as Geoffrey Wilder, Angel Parker as Catherine Wilder, Brittany Ishibashi as Tina Minoru, James Yaegashi as Robert Minoru, Kevin Weisman as Dale Yorkes, Brigid Brannagh as Stacey Yorkes, Annie Wersching as Leslie Dean, Kip Pardue as Frank Dean, James Marsters as Victor Stein, and Ever Carradine as Janet Stein.
Runaways was created in 2003 for Marvel's now defunct Tsunami imprint. Originally intended as a miniseries, Runaways proved popular enough for Marvel to turn it into a monthly ongoing series. Runaways helped earn Vaughan an Eisner Award, and was named on the 2006 American Library Association's YALSA Top Ten Books for Young Adults list.
Production on the pilot for Marvel's Runawaysbegan in February 2017 under the working title "Rugrats." Filming wrapped on March 3.
Vaughan and Alphona departed in 2007. A series of other creative teams took over Runaways for a time, including Avengers director Joss Whedon. Eventually the series ended, with the characters being integrated into the larger Marvel universe. Victor Mancha, Ultron's son and a late edition to the team, became an Avenger, and Nico Minoru became a member of A-Force.
Nico's mother, Tina Minoru, appeared in the Doctor Strange movie prequel comic, already providing the series with a tie to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.
