With Captain America: Civil War and The Jungle Book grossing $404.27 million and $358.4 million, respectively, at the North American box office, Scarlett Johansson recently became the highest-grossing domestic actors of all-time. In total her films have pulled in $3.3 billion at the domestic box office.

Of course, much of that figure is due to her involvement with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That's why it shouldn't surprise anyone that her favorite role is Black Widow.

"I really like playing Natasha; playing the Black Widow [in The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Captain America: Civil War]," the 31-year-old actress told Michigan Avenue Magazine at last week's School of the Art Institute of Chicago's Gene Siskel Film Center Renaissance Award 2016 gala. "It's been an interesting journey, to take a character and grow it over these years, and peel the layers back and be able to, as you do in life, grow with this person. It's a character that's really enigmatic and has an amazing origins story, so there's a lot for me to play off of."

Johansson was then asked why fans have a deep affection for her Marvel role? "People like the puzzle pieces," she offered. "It's part of the fun of the Marvel franchise. They like to see these little pieces come together, and [discover] little references that they knew from the comics and stuff, so it's fun. I like that."

Johansson will get to add to her box office record when the animated film Sing is released this December and the live-action Ghost in the Shell film opens on March 31, 2017. The next Marvel project that she is set to appear in is Avengers: Infinity War Part 1, but that won't arrives in theaters until May 4, 2018.
