The biggest mystery surrounding Marvel's The Defenders remains its villain, played by Sigourney Weaver. Besides her name, Alexandra, almost nothing is known about the woman who will challenge the combined might of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist.
Stephanie Malansky is the designer tasked with coming up with Alexandra's look, and she's shedding a bit of light on the characteristics that informed her design decisions.
"I'd say very elegant, very beautiful," Maslansky says of Alexandra in an interview with IBT. "I had so much fun designing her wardrobe. It was very, possibly even in a way, grounded in an older world. Maybe very, in a way, European. More of a global feeling to her wardrobe, very lush."
The "older world" look to Alexandra speaks towards the character's role.
"I think that she's clearly a baddie, and she's the head of an ancient organization which is grounded in the comics," Maslansky says. "I hope that her wardrobe reflects that kind of ancientness. I hope I haven't said too much. I hope Marvel doesn't come after me."
One "ancient organization which is grounded in the comics" that has popped up multiple times in Marvel's Netflix shows is the Hand. Could Alexandra be the Hand's leader? The idea certainly fits with what Mike Colter had to say about her.
"The villains that we are dealing with are a combination of several entities and they all have something to do with our separate stories that have been played out in each of our own individual series," Colter, who plays Luke Cage, said.
Marvel's The Defenders is the miniseries that will bring together all of Marvel's Netflix stars, including Iron Fist (Finn Jones) Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), and Luke Cage (Mike Colter), to protect New York City from its greatest threat yet.
Marvel's The Defenders is developed by Douglas Petrie and Marco Ramirez. The miniseries will also feature Sigourney Weaver as the villain, Alexandra (Sigourney Weaver), and several recurring guest stars from Marvel's Daredevil, Marvel's Jessica Jones, Marvel's Luke Cage, and Marvel's Iron Fist, including Eka Darville as Malcolm Ducasse, Simone Missick as Misty Knight, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, Carrie-Anne Moss as Jeri Hogarth, Scott Glenn as Stick, Rachael Taylor as Trish Walker, Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple, and Jessica Henwick as Colleen Wing.
Marvel's The Defenders premieres on Netflix on Aug. 18, 2017.
