The first official image for Thor: Ragnarok has just been released, and fans are raving over the character’s awesome new look. Instead of donning the long locks that audiences are accustomed to, the first look at Chris Hemsworth features a much shorter haircut.

There was one other major difference in the character’s appearance in this new photo, and it’s a much bigger deal than the shorter hair.

Thor is holding two enormous swords – which look incredible – but he’s without his famous hammer, Mjolnir.

The mighty hammer chooses a worthy wielder, and the last few Marvel movies have proven just how powerful the weapon is. It can call down lighting, plow through the Earth, and even allow Thor to fly.

So, why doesn’t Thor have it?

There’s two big ideas that could be possible regarding the absence. First, Thor could have been taken captive and forced to lose the weapon. It’s clear that no one else can possess Mjolnir, but enough power can certainly remove Thor from it. If he’s taken prisoner (which may explain his short hair), this would make a lot of sense. That theory also ties into the idea that the plot of the film will be similar to Planet Hulk.

The other theory here is that Thor may have become unworthy. In the comics, Thor becomes unable to carry Mjolnir, after the hammer discovers one of his oldest secrets. Upon deciding Thor isn’t the worthy god he was always thought to be, Mjolnir abandons him.

Either way, it looks like Thor is undergoing some serious changes in Ragnarok.
