The first trailer for Thor: Ragnarok had all kinds of Easter Eggs hidden throughout, and many of them were to classic Marvel comics that fans have always loved. However, there is one nod to a fan-favorite character than many people seemed to miss.
As the trailer was ending, Thor was unexpectedly pitted against the Hulk. When he realized his opponent was an old ally, Thor delivered the funniest line of the trailer. He exclaimed, "I know him! He's a friend from work!" Regardless of their past, Hulk still attacked Thor, almost as if he had orders to do so.
This moment was a direct throwback to a specific scene in the Planet Hulk comics.
When Hulk is thrown into the arena, he's isn't told who he will be fighting. As it turns out, he's pitted against someone he's known for quite a while - Silver Surfer.
It's almost as if the roles are reversed here, as Silver Surfer is the one who is being made to fight, and Hulk is reluctant to take him on. Hulk begins to say that his opponent isn't a rival at all. He says, "That's not paint. he's the Silver Surfer. He's my---"
Surfer finishes his sentence by uttering one word, "Friend."
While the line was a bit funnier in the movie, the point being made is still the same. Hulk - like Surfer in the comics - is being made into a champion of entertainment. He has to fight, or else he will suffer the consequences. Thor - like Hulk in the comics - recognizes that his opponent should be his ally, and that the two have a history.
Since Greg Pak's Planet Hulk is one of the biggest influences for the film, it won't be surprising to see more of these nods show up once Ragnarok is released in November.
Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok – the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization – at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger – The Incredible Hulk!"
The cast features Chris Hemsworth in the title role for the fifth time; Tom Hiddleston as Thor's adversarial, adopted brother, Loki; Idris Elba as the Asgardian sentry, Heimdall; Sir Anthony Hopkins again portraying Odin, Ruler of Asgard; Mark Ruffalo reprising his role of Bruce Banner/the Hulk; Cate Blanchett as the mysterious and powerful new villain Hela; Jeff Goldblum as the eccentric Grandmaster; Tessa Thompson bring the classic hero Valkyrie to life on the big screen; and Karl Urban will add his might to the fray as Skurge.
