Michael Fassbender had never played any of the Assassin's Creed games prior to accepting the lead role in the upcoming feature film based on the franchise, EW reports.

The Ubisoft game has engendered sequels, spinoffs, comics, animation and much more -- but it never caught the eye of the X-Men: Days of Future Past star until after he'd already signed on to play Callum Lynch and produce the movie.

"I hadn't played it before these guys approached me," Fassbender said, adding, "I've played it since [being offered the job] mainly to get an idea of the physicality of the character. We're striving to find something special. We believe the whole concept around it is special and want to service that the best we can. The fans are really passionate: very specific and they expect accuracy and historical detail. We're really trying to capitalize and feed on and enjoy the fun element. We're working hard to make this something special."

He's got plenty of time to get comfortable with the mythology before he'll be doing too many interviews: Assassin's Creed hits theaters on December 21, 2016.

In the film, Callum Lynch is a descendant of the mysterious secret society the Assassins who must use his deadly skills to battle the powerful Templar organization.
