Geek über-producer Simon Kinberg, who has his hands in both the Star Wars and X-Men franchises at the moment, talked to Collider about the next solo chapter in the latter universe, Gambit, and what to expect tonally. He said that each solo movie will take on its own feel, much like the solo comics do compared to big team affairs.
"Gambit will have its own different flavor and tone to it," Kinberg said, "[it] will be more of like a heist movie and a sexy thriller in a way."
He said that Deadpool, the first of three X-Men films scheduled for 2016, "has a very different, almost antithetical tone to the mainline X-Men movies," meanwhile.
Kinberg didn't confirm or deny previous director reports for Gambit, but did say "we have a director, it's somebody we're excited about and somebody I adore," and that he's hoping they'll make an announcement soon. This director has already been in meetings with Channing, producers, and the screenwriter Joshua Zetumer.
While he didn't say it outright, Kinberg hinted that the October 7, 2016 release date will probably be pushed back to 2017, as "we hope to start shooting next spring," and a special-effects super hero film will probably need more than 5 or 6 months for full production and post.
