In spite of an R rating, which generally limits the scope of a film's opening weekend, estimates are still coming in that Deadpool will likely earn around $70 million this weekend, per Variety.
The weekend has the benefit of a Monday holiday; it's Presidents Day in the U.S., which means schools and many offices will be closed.
Fox is trying to stay on the conservative side, projecting $60 to $65 million for the movie -- which some other analysts have pegged as a likely $75 million earner. The film cost less than $60 million to make, so barring a disappointment, it's likely to earn its budget back this weekend and then some.
Based upon Marvel Comics' most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.
