Godzilla will be taking one step closer to his epic upcoming showdown with King Kong in Godzilla vs. Kong by first battling a trio of iconic Kaiju monsters in the Godzilla reboot sequel, Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
As was teased in Kong: Skull Island's post-credits scene, we know have confirmation that Mothra, Rodan & King Ghidorah will be three of the big monster foes that Godzilla will battle in the film. The recent announcement that King of Monsters is now in production, came with a synopsis that revealed the trio of monsters as major characters - read that below:
SYNOPSIS: The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity's very existence hanging in the balance.
For longtime fans of the Godzilla franchise, this will be welcome news - though there will undoubtedly be those who want to throw daggers at the original Godzilla reboot, for the way that film held back from showing Kaiju vs Godzilla battle moments, until the third act climax.
Read on for a breakdown of the three monsters, as detailed by Comicbook.com's Brandon Davis:
Mothra is a fan-favorite among those who root for Godzilla.
Having appear in a dozen titles across various mediums, Mothra is the original flying opponent to Godzilla. She originally introduced the idea of a monster being one of the "good guys." Mothra is always ready to throw down and frequently finds herself involved with fights but, historically, has rarely left too many marks on her opponents.
However, when Mothra dies, she tends to leave some larva behind which can take her place.prevnext
Ghidorah is one of the top ranking Godzilla monsters and was clearly revealed when what looked like a three-headed dragon took the screen during Skull Island's post-credits scene.
Ghidorah is a golden dragon which has appeared in just shy of 10 titles. He is Godzilla best known foe and is considered by most to be his arch-enemy. If being a three-headed golden dragon wasn't enough, Ghidorah ups his appearance game when he becomes "Mecha-King Ghidorah" is the Heisei series.
The addition of Ghidorah to the Kong vs. Godzilla franchise will certainly up the anticipation ranking.prevnext
The Charizard-looking monster which was shown in the black and white images at the end of Kong was Godzilla opponent Rodan.
Rodan has appeared in over half of a dozen titles and is a well-received flying monster which resembles a pterodactyl. Rodan has served as an enemy to Godzilla on several occasions but is, quite often, an ally to the scaly one. While Rodan has never been crucial to Godzilla stories, he earns favoritism from his ability to be a supporting role to Godzilla's lead.prev
