The Dark Tower trailer was officially rated on April 28. Considering the timing, the trailer could begin appearing in theaters as soon as this weekend, possibly attached to the North American release of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

The Consumer Protections BC website actually shows two separate rating entries for The Dark Tower trailer. These are most likely just individual entries for the 2D and 3D versions of the same trailer.

A workprint trailer for The Dark Tower leaked online in October 2016. The video was quickly pulled down by Columbia Pictures.

The first poster for The Dark Tower movie was revealed in March.

The Dark Tower movie will be followed by a Dark Tower television series set in the same continuity as the film. The television series will primarily be based on Stephen King's novel The Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass and wil fill in the backstory of The Dark Tower. Idris Elba will reprise his role as Roland, the Gunslinger, in the show's frame story, alongside Tom Taylor as Jake Chambers, but a younger actor will play Roland in the series' main narrative.

In The Dark Tower, Jake Chambers is a young 11-year-old adventure seeker who discovers clues about another dimension called Mid-World. Upon following the mystery, he is spirited away to Mid-World where he encounters the lone frontiersman knight Roland Deschain, who is on a quest to reach the ‘Dark Tower’ that resides in End-World and reach the nexus point between time and space that he hopes will save Mid-World from extinction. But with various monsters and a vicious sorcerer named Walter Padick hot on their trail, the unlikely duo find that their quest may be difficult to complete.

The Dark Tower is directed and co-written by Nikolaj Arcel, based on the series of novels of the same name by Stephen King, starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. The Dark Tower movie serves as a sequel to the novels, continuing the cycle described in the books into its next iteration.

The Dark Tower is scheduled to open in theaters on Aug. 4, 2017.
