Saorise Ronan

Not long ago, rumors began circulating that The Host star Saorise Ronan was being used internally as "the look" of the Scarlet Witch for Marvel's The Avengers 2. While those rumors could mean a number of things--from the studio wanting her to a concept artist just liking her look and using her with no studio input at all, assuming of course that the rumors are even true--they took on a bit of a life of their own online, with a number of sites suggesting she was a frontrunner for the role. Today comes a report that Ronan has commented on the rumors--and that she finds them exciting. "I have heard about it and yes, I would. Yeah, of course I would," Ronan told the feminist comics blog The Mary Sue while promoting her new film Violet & Daisy. "I love Joss and I love those films, and I love his handle on them and how he portrayed these kinds of superheroes. I think it's very different from what anyone else has done. So yeah, I'd love to be in it." Scarlet Witch and her brother Quicksilver have been confirmed by Whedon as appearing in the film, although nobody at Marvel has commented on the possibility of casting Ronan, or even the veracity of rumors that she was being used as the basis for establishing the look. Adding Scarlet Witch to the equation for the second film is an interesting move that will dramatically alter the role of female superheroes in the Marvel Universe; up until now, all we'd seen was Black Widow (who's basically a very competent soldier) and Sif (the same, but Asgardian). Neither of them are head and shoulders more powerful than those around them, whereas Scatlet Witch's chaos magic gives her enormous potential, arguably making her one of the two or three most powerful members of The Avengers. She'll also be one of the very few female superhero characters ever depicted onscreen with actual superpowers. The film rights for Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are jointly-held by 20th Century Fox and Walt Disney Studios/Marvel, meaning that it's theoretically plausible that Ronan, if cast, could either appear in both the X-Men and Avengers movies; or find herself playing the same character at the same time as another actress in opposing franchises.
