In September, Mark Hamill made waves by revealing when the trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. In a now-deleted tweet, he told an impatient fan to watch Monday Night Football on October 9.
Hamill spoke with me at a recent media event for the new Star Wars movie, when he revealed how much trouble he got in with Disney when he spilled the beans about the trailer's long-awaited debut. Watch the Luke Skywalker actor tell his side of the story in the video above.
"Everything that I'm not meant to say is flagged, and Disney realized it was not my fault. They didn't flag it," explained Hamill. "The trailer for The Force Awakens was the same week in October… There's no surprise. They followed the exact model as before.
"When I saw it in my book — because when they told me, it was months ahead — I flipped ahead and *points* trailer on that date. And when I saw someone speculate… I went through my book and it didn't have that mark on it. I said, 'oh, cool.'"
Back in September, Hamill tweeted that fans should "Watch Monday Night Football on Monday October 9th - for no reason in particular."
Despite his "coy" response, Lucasfilm and Disney were not appreciated and he received a phone call requesting he delete his tweet.
"I said, 'Look, if I take it down, it's going to bring more attention to it. Because by now somebody's screenshot it. And if I take it down, it will be confirmation it's true. So let's just ignore it.' 'No, no, take it down.'"
Hamill pointed out to Disney and Lucasfilm that he was never warned NOT to say anything, "search your feelings, you know it to be true." And so he didn't get in any trouble with the mouse-eared overlords.
"But aren't you glad I did it? We're at least talking about it," Hamill said. "You think, 'Gee, what a terrible thing it would be to get more people to watch your stupid trailer!' I mean, really? What's the problem? 'Well, it's mother's news. WE wanted to be the ones that said it.' I don't know when they announced it, but it's a storm in a teacup. But big deal over nothing."
The trailer was officially announced the day before that NFL game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Chicago Bears, though fans were privy months before.
But Hamill did fans a huge favor with his reveal, giving people something to look forward to in the long wait for the new movie. So, thank you, Mark. Now if you're reading this, do you have any info on the trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story?
Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres December 15.
