Now that fans finally have a name for director Rian Johnson’s (Looper) Star Wars movie, speculation has begun about the implications of the title, given where we left things in The Force Awakens.
Taking what we know (and peppering in a little bit of what we want to see), here are 5 Things We Expect to See in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
The Implied Stakes
The biggest looming question right now is, “Who is (or are) the Last Jedi?”ย There’s a thriller element to the title that fans are definitely going toย want in the film.ย
Whether it’s Luke as a mentor, Kylo/Rey/Finn as pupils, or some combination of all that,ย Episode VIIIย needs to put the existence of The Jedi in real question – in a palpable way that makes audiences sweat and tremble.ย
A Nice Twist on Expectation
Right now,ย Star Warsย fans are buzzing and chirping about whatย The Last Jediย means – which is exactly the reactionย Lucasfilm wanted.ย
“The Internet is gonna Internet,” as they say, so there will be many, many, theoriesย about this by the timeย The Last Jediย hits theaters. However, we wouldn’t expect such a provocative title beingย chosen just for novelty; we’re keeping open minds that itย could be misdirection for a major twist (like a certain villain’s redemption?).ย

The Power of Luke Skywalker
You know that big Darth Vader moment at the end ofย Rogue One: A Star Wars Story? Yeah, we need some of that from Luke Skywalker too.ย
Mostย of Luke’s actionย in The Original Trilogy were slower duels; the battle against Jabba showed Luke as a capable master – but by the era of The Last Jedi, we expect to see a much more powerful “Master Luke” – maybe scary powerful…
Return of The Sith
It shouldย be remembered that Kylo Ren and Supreme Leader Snoke are not confirmed Sith Lords. In fact, Snoke is not a confirmed Force user at all, and supplementary materials forย The Force Awakensย (like the official visual guide) reveal that Kylo Ren’s light/dark imbalance is what made him attractive to Snoke in the first place.ย
Those threads of information suggest that the actual Sith Order has yet to make a full resurgence in the newย Force Awakensย era – but we expect they could definitely show up again inย The Last Jedi. If/when they do,ย they’ll be as unhappy with “pretenders” like Snoke and Ren as they are with return of Luke Skywalker andย the Jedi Order.
Something New
Going back to the implications of the title: “The Last Jedi” doesn’t necessarily have to spell doom and peril for the heroic order – it could also signify an evolution.ย
Withย Episode VIII marking the true “passing of the torch” to a new generation ofย Star Warsย heroes, we expect that we couldย see a new order rising from the ashes of The Jedi.
