Star Wars: John Williams Wants To Provide 'Episode IX' Score

Just as memorable as all the characters, locations and battles in the Star Wars saga is the score, which is often supplied by the living legend John Williams. Unsurprisingly, the composer confirmed with Variety that he still aims to complete the score for this sequel trilogy by providing his talents to the upcoming Episode IX.

"I would very much like to complete that," Williams expressed at the idea of completing this trilogy. This information comes weeks after the confirmation that Williams would provide the theme for Solo: A Star Wars Story, while John Powell will create the film's actual score.

These details come as no surprise to most, as Williams expressed in 2013 that he was interested in crafting the scores for the new films. However, with the composer turning 86 next month, one would think he'd consider retirement, yet his schedule doesn't appear to be slowing.

Williams has amassed 50 Academy Awards nominations for his work, with his contributions to The Last Jedi and The Post potentially earning him two more notches on his impressive resume. Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson had claimed that, of all of the amazing experiences that came along with joining the Star Wars universe, nothing could compare to working with Williams.

The filmmaker shared that "of all the cool amazing stuff that I was lucky enough to get to do, the experience with John was the highlight of the highlights."

The interesting challenge for the composer with The Last Jedi was combining classic themes, such as those for Leia, with the all-new characters' themes, such as Rey and Snoke.

"When we see Rey, we want to hear Rey's theme," Williams confessed. "And when the Force is referred to or felt, we want to hear the Force theme, and so on. We hope that these references make sense to the fans and make the aural connections that we want them to have."

Out of all of the incredible moments in the film, Johnson claimed that the composer had the most fun developing music for the scenes that took place in Canto Bight, as it featured a variety of silly and diverse characters.

"There were guys pulling out plastic trumpets and dog-chew toys to be used as plungers," Johnson noted. "John was like a little kid that day."

Episode IX is slated to hit theaters on December 20, 2019.
