What Are the Sacred Jedi Texts in 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi'?

Ever since the first trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi debuted, fans have been speculating and debating over the ancient books that appeared.

When Luke Skywalker's gloved hand ran over the symbol of the ancient Jedi Order in the clip, it set off theories about the Old Republic, the Journal of the Whills, and grey Jedi being included in the new film.

But now that people are starting to see the new film, the answer has been revealed: just what are these books? And what significance do they hold?

WARNING: Spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi below…

The sacred Jedi texts are… sacred Jedi texts. Yes, that's it. They contain the earliest teachings of the Order and its relationship with the Force, though they are hardly significant to the plot of the film.

What is important in Star Wars: The Last Jedi is how Rey comes to learn about the history of the Force and how it relates to her, Kylo Ren, and the current struggle between the Resistance and the First Order.

Luke Skywalker isn't particularly interested in teaching her, especially after his attempts with Kylo Ren literally blew up in his face. But when Rey exhibits some proficiency with the Force and her feelings guide her to the heart of the sacred, ancient tree (which fans have begun referring to as "the Force tree"), she discovers the texts. This prompts Luke to relent in his refusal, instead offering to teach her three lessons that promise to reveal the ways of the Jedi — and why the Order must end.

In the end, Luke attempts to destroy the texts, the Force tree, and the last remnants of the Jedi Order when he's stopped — by whom or what, we won't spoil for you here. In this moment, he is faced with clarity and realizes that he needn't fear his failure of Kylo Ren, and instead must impart his wisdom to Rey in order to preserve hope in the galaxy.

But Rey has already secured the Jedi texts, as revealed in the movie's closing moments. She has taken them from the Force tree and stored them safely on the Millennium Falcon, so that she may glean their lessons and apply them as she sees fit.

We don't know what exactly is in the books by the film's end or what secrets they contain, but at least there's a chance for the order to live on.
