The Walking Dead is one of the most true-to-its-source-material comic book adaptations currently being produced in live action, but never more than when the series killed Glenn in the Season Seven premiere.

The video above, available as one of the bonus features on The Walking Dead: The Complete Seventh Season Blu-ray set, features many of the shows writers and producers describing how Robert Kirkman's graphic novels are brought to television screens on Sunday nights. Featured in the video are executive producer Greg Nicotero, co-executive producer and writer Angela Kang, and showrunner Scott Gimple, each offering their perspective of how Glenn's iconic death on the pages of The Walking Dead issue #100 were brought to the TV series.

"Having the graphic novel is our basis," Nicotero said. "When I got to that close up of his face bashed in, trying to say 'Maggie,' I was forever changed by how senseless that moment felt in the comic book."

"The death of Glenn is one of those iconic moments from the comics and our showrunner Scott [Gimple] really wanted to capture the moments directly from the comic so that's always fun to do," Kang said. "It really was stunning. When I read it, I gasped out loud."

That's where Abraham's inclusion in the Lucille moments came in. "Abraham, who had already died in the comic book storyline prior to this, he was the who got an arrow through the eye in the comic, we thought, 'Okay, maybe this is one way to maintain that level of shock,'" Kang explained.

For showrunner Scott Gimple, it was all about maintaining the element of surprise while remaining loyal to the comics. "My goal is to have a real fidelity to the comic, while still switching things around, remixing them, to get to that feeling that The Walking Dead comics would give you," Gimple said.

More insider perspective of The Walking Dead Season 7 is available on commentary tracks and featurettes included on The Walking Dead: The Complete Seventh Season which is available on Blu-ray on August 22nd.

The Walking Dead's sibling series Fear the Walking Dead returns September 10th. The Walking Dead will return for its eighth season on October 22, 2017.
