If youv’e been buying the musical releases from Riverdale, you know that’s code for Josie and the Pussycats, with Murray being the actress who plays Josie. Typically, music featuring Murray wil have been performed by Josie and the Pussycats in the show, whereas music “featuring KJ Apa” will be one of Archie’s songs.
The song “Astronaut,” which appears on the soundtrack, was recorded for the season finale, which aired two weeks ago, but never used in the show. “Astronaut’ was referenced in dialogue from the episode, but didn’t make it into the episode’s final cut.
The song was written by a group called Transviolet, who have been performing the song live for about a year but who haven’t released it commercially yet. Based on a number of recent tweets, it seems that a new album from Transviolet is due out on June 9. No telling whether their version of “Astronaut” will appear on that record.
During our recent conversation with Ashleigh Murray at The CW’s upfronts, we asked about “Astronaut.”
“It actually was in a scene that was ultimately deleted,” Murray confirmed. “So it was supposed to be in the finale, and ended up being taken out, I imagine for time constraints. But it’s perfect because now Roberto [Aguirre-Sacasa] wants to do a lot more with it, which makes me very happy becuase it’s my favorite song from the whole season. That’s the kind of music that I want to make for the Pussycats. So it was a good thing. It was sad, but it’s good.”
The Riverdale soundtrack is currently available digitally on retailers like iTunes and Amazon. A CD release hasn’t yet been announced. You can buy “Astronaut” either as part of the album or as a digital single. To hear Transviolet’s version, check out this YouTube recording.
