Sony decided to take a victory lap prior to this year's E3, revealing a long list of impressive stats about their hardware to various outlets. Of course, the headline achievement is the PlayStation 4 selling 60 million units, but Sony had plenty of other numbers to brag about.
For instance, according to Sony, PlayStation Network users spend (nearly) a combined 50,000 years playing games every week. Breaking it down, PlayStation owners log 26 billion minutes of game time per week, which translates to 49,467 years. That's a big number, although it makes a bit more sense once you divide it by the 60 million PlayStation 4 owners out there – turns out the average PlayStation user plays around seven hours a week. That sounds about right. Personally, I play more than that, but then I do this for a living.
One thing not mentioned by Sony, is if these 50,000 years' worth of "gaming" includes watching video via streaming services like Netflix. If that's included, suddenly that seven-hour figure doesn't look quite as impressive. Speaking of Netflix, apparently, PS4 users love it. The PlayStation store is also growing by leaps and bounds…
"Netflix use is massive on PlayStation. The PS store on PlayStation is now the number one retailer of PlayStation software worldwide."
The takeaway here? The PlayStation brand is doing very well, thank you very much. Well, unless we're talking about the PlayStation 4 Pro. Or the poor old PS Vita. But hey, the standard PS4 is popular enough to cover for a few misses or experiments.
What's next for PlayStation? We'll find out at Sony's E3 2017 press conference, which is set to drop on Monday, June 12 at 6pm PT. Expect more bragging!
