Spoilers for tonight’s episode of Supergirl, “Midvale”, below.

Tonight’s episode followed a flashback of Kara (Melissa Benoist) and Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) in high school, and showed them bonding following the death of their friend, Kenny. They discovered Kenny’s laptop hidden in the woods, and attempted to decode exactly what was on it.

Kara mentioned that her cousin has a friend named Chloe – a name that certainly caught the attention of DC Comics fans. As fans of the Superman mythos will know, this is a reference to one of Smallville‘s main characters, Chloe Sullivan (Alison Mack).

Chloe served as Clark Kent’s childhood friend, who helped him on a wide array of adventures throughout the years. In addition to being skilled with computers, Chloe kept track of the town’s superpowered beings on the “Wall of Weird”.

What makes this reference a little different than other Easter eggs is the fact that Chloe was initially created for Smallville. While Chloe was eventually brought into the DC Comics canon in 2010, she didn’t interact with Superman in her appearances, making the Supergirl reference a pretty direct callback to Smallville.

As has been proven throughout Supergirl‘s run, the two shows don’t share the same canon. But it does prove that the Arrowverse’s version of Clark Kent/Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) has his own incarnation of Chloe – something that has been speculated about by fans for quite some time.

Could we see Chloe in the events of Supergirl‘s present day? It’s way too early to tell, but now fans know that it’s at least somewhat possible.

Supergirl airs Mondays at 8/7c on The CW.
