Disney Infinity has been canceled by Disney Interactive.

The news was delivered during a Disney earnings call Tuesday, and followed up on with an official statement by Senior VP and GM John Blackburn.

"By now you may have heard the news that we have made the difficult decision to discontinue production of Disney Infinity. From the beginning, Disney Infinity was built for you — our fans — and I wanted to take a moment to thank you not just for your support over the years, but for creating a community that made Disney Infinity more than just a game," Blackburn said. "Our goal for Disney Infinity was to bring the best of Disney storytelling to life in homes around the world, and with your support we accomplished that. We hope you had as much fun playing the game as we had making it."

The final two releases for Disney Infinity will be the three characters for Alice Through the Looking Glass in May and the Finding Dory play set in June.

According to the earnings call, Avalanche, the in-house developer based in Salt Lake City, Utah that was lead developer on Infinity will be shuttered, with the team being laid off.

Disney Infinity ruled the toys-to-life category in 2014, but sales for the Star Wars edition in 2015 and the new Marvel characters and play set in early 2016 were lower than expected.

The news comes as a shock to fans - and to many on the Disney Infinity team. They had plans for a new Star Wars playset and several new Marvel characters for 2016, which the official twitter account talked about as little as three hours before the earnings call.
