The two Time Warner networks are now part of a content deal reached with Warner Bros., Time Warner chairman and CEO Jeff Bewkes revealed during a Wednesday earnings call.
Bewkes didn’t go into any further specifics of the deal, but it is believed to include previously released films, including Suicide Squad, and all upcoming films based on DC Entertainment intellectual properties.
This is a deal specific to the cable television window, so TNT and TBS viewers won’t be getting their DC Comics superhero movie fix until after the DC Films movies have left theaters and spent some time on a premium cable network. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice makes its premium cable debut on HBO in November.
This new deal may help to make TNT and TBS a prime destination for superhero movie fans. The addition of the DC Extended Universe follows a previous deal with Walt Disney that brings the Marvel Studios movies to TNT and TBS. The Walt Disney deal also includes the Star Wars films. TNT and TBS are also the cable television home of Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games movies.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice earned $330 million at the box office. Suicide Squad earned $323 million, and had the biggest August opening weekend of all time, earning $134 million in its first three days.
In addition to praising Warner Bros.’ third-quarter box office performance, Bewkes also called out the success of DC Entertainment-inspired television series, saying they earn more than $1 billion in revenue each year and touting the 10 series on air this season.
In a final shout out to DC Entertainment, Bewkes specifically praised DC Comics’ Rebirth initiative and the significant boost in sales it has provided.
Time Warner is currently in the process of being acquired by telecommunications giant AT&T for $85.4 billion.
