New Code Geass Anime Debuts Teaser Trailer

2017 is shaping up to be a great one for anime fans. Shows like Attack on Titan and Blue Exorcist will be making their long-awaited comebacks, and they will not be the only ones. Code Geass will return with a brand-new anime series called Code Geass: Lelouch of the Resurrection. And, now, fans have gotten their first look at the series thanks to a newly uploaded teaser trailer.

Over the weekend, a celebration was held to honor the 10th anniversary of Code Geass as the first anime debuted back in October 2006. "Anniversary of a Miracle" went all out with its theatrical events, and it ended with a surprising gift. Fans were shown the first promotional video (PV) for the new series which featured re-recorded dialogue and a brief look at the show's main character.

When the series was first announced, fans were curious how Code Geass could make a return. When the last anime end, the franchise's protagonist Lelouch was killed after orchestrating an elaborate plot to bring about world peace. However, the staff behind Code Geass: Lelouch of the Resurrection stressed the third series would see the hero return. The creators also said the anime would be a sequel and take place within the same universe as its predecessors, leaving fans to believe that Lelouch will either be resurrected or that he wasn't quite so dead as they all thought.

You can watch the trailer above, but the teaser's climax comes at the very end. Fans can be heard screaming when the video shows a short clip of a very familiar eye. The distinctive purple hue and iris design of Lelouch's eye are impossible to ignore, and fans are eager to see the character return in the new year.

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Ressurection will be a sequel to the Zero Requiem storyline; However, that arc ended with Lelouch dead. The protagonist, who had managed to stop Charles zi Britannia and take control over the empire, used his death to make peace amongst the world's superpowers.

Lelouch decided he would disrupt order by promising to destroy the world and take down the United Federation of Nations and Black Knights. The decision tarnished his reputation amongst world leaders, and Lelouch became a target for everyone's anger. Before Lelouch could 'finalize' his plan, he then had his comrade Suzaku disguised himself as the vigilante Zero and executed Lelouch publicly. The leader's death let the world breathe a sigh of relief, and Lelouch was left to die in the arms of his sister.

Since the last anime ended with Lelouch's death, it will be interesting to see how the franchise plans to revive the protagonist. The new series is named 'Resurrection,' so some magic or even time-travel might be needed to complete the task.

If you have not caught up on all things Code Geass, then you still have time. The series is a long one, but it's a well-received one. Aside from the first two seasons, there is another spin-off OVA series which fans were gifted recently. Code Geass: Akito the Exiled is a five-part miniseries that takes place between the two full seasons. Funimation has plans to release the OVA series on home video early next year, so fans will be able to binge it before Code Geass: Lelouch of the Resurrection rears its head.
