This weekend, the "Yuri!!! on Ice" stage event in Japan wrapped on Saturday with a surprise announcement. The evening show confirmed that Mappa was working on a brand-new Yuri on Ice film. The report even confirmed the feature would not be a compilation of the TV show, leaving fans to revel in that fact that new content is coming to Yuri on Ice.

Funimation's synopsis for Yuri on Ice can be read below:

"Yuri Katsuki makes his way to the Grand Prix ice skating competition as Japan's top representative with his eyes on the prize. However, instead of celebrating, Yuri walks away defeated and ready to retire for good. But a run-in with champion Viktor Nikiforov and rising star Yuri Plisetsky ignites a new fire within him. With the two of them close by his side, Yuri will take to the ice once more."

If you are not familiar with Yuri on Ice, then you have plenty of time to get acquainted with the series. The show premiered in October 2016 and tells the story of Yuri Katsuki. The young man is a professional figure skater who suffers from crippling anxiety, and Yuri chooses to break from the sport after a dismal appearance at the Grand Prix Final. However, things begin to change for Yuri when a video of him skating to a routine by Victor Nikiforov goes viral. The latter skater is world-renowned for his beauty and skill - and Victor comes all the way to Japan to coach Yuri. The two grow closer as they come to rediscover their passion for skating, and sparks fly when Yuri realizes his admiration for Victor goes further than he once thought.

Right now, there is no word on whether Yuri on Ice will get a complete second season. The possibility was teased during the anime's first season finale. Given the show's undeniable success, Mappa will likely green-light a new season should its feature film provide the studio with proof of popularity.
