Two Legendary Anime Movies Finally Cross Over in Stunning New Promo

Everyone loves a good crossover. But that applies tenfold when the properties in question are the two most prolific sci-fi anime movies ever made! When fans think of the most influential anime films of all time, Ghost in the Shell and Akira both instantly come to mind. As part of a new exhibition opening in Osaka, the legendary sci-fi classics have officially crossed over in a stunning new piece of art by Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo.

Arguably, the most iconic shot from Akira is the poster depicting Kaneda walking towards his bike. The poster has been recreated countless times, and Katsuhiro Otomo is bringing it back once again for the new gallery. “The World of Masamune Shirow: Ghost in the Shell and the Path of Creation” travelling exhibition recently opened in Osaka, and, to celebrate its opening, Otomo’s artwork has been unveiled. In the image, Motoko Kusanagi mimics Akira‘s iconic poster by walking up to a Tachikoma, one of the walking tanks in the Ghost in the Shell manga and anime. The Tachikoma has been stylized after Kaneda’s bike, with a red paint job and plenty of stickers.

The exhibition was first unveiled in April of this year in Tokyo, where it remained until August. For those planning on visiting “The World of Masamune Shirow: Ghost in the Shell and the Path of Creation” exhibition, it will remain in Osaka until October 5th. The exhibition includes countless collaborations from other respected artists and mangakas, but Osaka will be the exclusive home of the Katsujiro Otomo x Ghost in the Shell illustration. A New Ghost in the Shell Anime Is Coming

1995’s Ghost in the Shell might be one of the most prolific anime movies ever made, but even it isn’t safe from being remade. Ignoring the Scarlett Johansson-led live-action version released in 2017, Ghost in the Shell is getting a brand new TV anime. Science SARU (Dandadan) will front the new series, which doesn’t yet have an official release date.

Some fans might be divided about the new adaptation, but series creator Masamune Shirow is welcoming the new adaptation as it will bring the beloved sci-fi story to a new generation. “Considering the shift in production staff, one could even consider this the first installment of a second generation,” they said. “The original manga is quite old, so I ask for your understanding on that point (sorry!). That said, I sincerely hope this will once again be an enjoyable visual experience in some form.”
